Wintering Least and Western Sandpipers
On 1/11/04, while kayaking, my daughter Naomi and I found 243 sandpipers (in basic plumage) waiting for the tide to go out, on a little-used dock at Astoria Marine Construction, about 0.5 mile from the mouth of the Lewis & Clark River. The kayak did not seem to alarm them at all, allowing us to get within 2 meters.
On the 1/12/04 I returned with a Sony Mavica FD-75, 10x optical zoom, and took the following photos. Almost all were LEAST SANDPIPERS; however, the last two images center on two separate WESTERN SANDPIPERS.
