History of our Schools

Astoria School District 1C established in 1854 has been meeting the needs of Astoria’s students for over 150 years.  One of the oldest establishments west of the Rockies, we take pride in our rich history and value our future - our nations future - our students.

Situated at the mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria is a unique area providing many opportunities to its residents.  During the 2004-2005 school year the Astoria School District restructured the district to make better use of resources.  The 3 traditional k-6 schools were rearranged to take full advantage of and better provide age appropriate programs - kindergarten, primary and intermediate.

Special Programs

Astoria School District provides services for students who are in need of additional support in order for them to be successful in their educational program. The services may include:

Special Education - this is provided for students who have specifically identified needs related to their individual learning style. These might be: Having a learning disability, behavioral needs, speech or language needs, a vision or hearing impairment, autism or some kind of health impairment. Services are provided in a variety of settings ranging from services occurring within the classroom to placement within a specialized classroom.

Early Intervention Services - these are special education services for children younger than kindergarten.

504 Plans – Students on a 504 plan are designed and provided for students who have a physical or mental impairment that significantly impacts their ability to access their education.

English Language Learners - instruction is provided for students for whom English is not their native or first language and whose use of language significantly impacts their ability to benefit from instruction.

Special Transportation - is provided for students who for physical or other reasons are not able to ride the regular school bus.

In order for a student to be eligible for any of these services there is a clearly defined process in order to determine whether these are appropriate for the student.

If you have any questions regarding these services or a concern about your child's education please contact the counselor in the school that your child belongs. For more information you can contact Diane Higgins at 325-0476. Our office is located at the district office, (785 Alameda).
